Which way is up planting Toothed Wood Fern

Baltimore, MD

Before planting 5 of these, I need to know which end is up. At one end of the toothed wood fern's bulb, rhizome or whatever, there are fine, filament fibers. Where these fibers join the main "item", tubular growths emanate and begin growing tightly towards the other end. Reaching the other end, they loosen, forming hollow tubes about 1/2 inch tall. Am I right in thinking the fine, filament fibers are the roots and should be planted in the down direction in the dirt? The end with hollow tubes is the up direction and should be planted so plant growth emerges from the soil at that end? Can anyone help?

Planting instructions: May be planted in any well-drained soil. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly. Provide a growing area in partial shade and with a moist, acid soil. The plant is native to North America. Easy to grow; ascending crown; naturally occurs in swamps and wet woods; full or partial shade.

Donna, Thank you for trying to help me. I have seen the directions online elsewhere that you posted. Unfortunately I am still confused. I THINK I intuitively know which end is up and how to plant this fern but I sure would love to KNOW. Does anyone else anything to say on this subject?
