Rooting cuttings

Mesilla Park, NM

I found this on the web, has anyone used this company, they have thousands of epis and I was just flabbergasted. It says to wait up to three weeks for callusing the ends. Depending on the weather.

I also stuck the link in the sticky up there since I didn't see it. What I liked about this site us that they will replace your EPI if it rots. On your next order they will send it to you if available. Which means you would have to place a second order but I think most of us do once we get the first flowers ...

I got my order from epis by Pat so I only let them callus a week, now I'm worried a little, they looked dry enough.

Hi Gourd,
I have not used Matts Landscaping but I think he does Epi videos on Youtube if that's the same one.
I purchased four or five rooted plants from a local garden shop about 8 years ago and took dozens of cuttings from them over the years and ended up with lots of plants the same color. My serious batch of cuttings came off ebay, I think it was Donsplants or something like that. 50 cuttings for $100 three years ago and I had 90% success. This is the first year they have bloomed.
You will hear different ideas from different growers. I used to leave mine up to 2 weeks. Then 10 days and now pretty much leave them a week. We have a humid environment in Hawaii but I keep them indoors during the callusing time.
I cut a couple of cuttings last year and put them straight into pots without waiting. They grew just fine but probably not advisable.
I put the callused cuttings into the potting mix but do not water for at least another week and the first watering is really light. I don't get into a regular watering schedule until I see new growth and then regular light watering for a couple of months.
I've had a few failures from the 150 plus cuttings I've taken over the years but overall good results.
Not sure how long you've grown Epis but as you get more obsessed you will find what works best for you.
Good Luck.

Gourd,
I haven't ordered from Mattslandscape either, but I have ordered from Dons plants. My climate is humid too, but I have found that usually a week to 10 days to callous over is usually plenty of time for the cuttings to callous for me.

I would like to order some cuttings soon, I just have to decide which I want. I keep making a wish list and then changing my mind. LOL

Microb, To just get to live in Hawaii, you get to see all the plumeria, morning glory plants. Sounds like an area paradise to me. Someday I'd love to go visit, maybe when DH retires. The closest I've ever been to a tropical place is the Jungle in Bolivia, and they had orchids, coffee, all these plants, ees, giant arums, etc, only thing at that time, I knew nothing about growing plants or gardening. I used to live near Fallbrook and never new these EPI growers were near me, I guess it was just as well. I would have gone overboard buying then would have had to leave them behind.

Thank you both for your comments. I have four lath lattice panels that I'm hoping to make a small dapple shade area in a few weeks so that I can move some of the cuttings there and use it to shade other plants. I need to find a plan design for a small area.

Now the wait begins for me, in two months, I hope there are roots and evidence of some growth

Gourd.................I stuck a piece of e. Telstar that broke off two-three weeks ago in a small pot to let it root. I did not let it callus...........I was moving alot of stuff around in the greenhouse and moving stuff outside, so I just did a quickie pot-up. It has 4-5 half inch roots on it today!! Perhaps it is the time of year............my epies are putting out many new leaves and they are growing fast!

Wholyhosta, thank you,

Oh, that s fantastic, the wind broke two small pieces and I'll try that, they are really thin too, they would probably die if I let them callus. I am misting them daily so maybe they will make it, they are just tip cuttings, nothing big, I almost threw them out.

I brought them all indoors two days ago, those winds are something else.

Mine are really beginning to take off now. They are putting out all kinds of new growth. I am looking for different ways to pot them. I have run out of shepherds hooks and places to hang the baskets. LOL.
