Government, Morher Nature or collaboration

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

As we travel southbound on the Dal-Hou corridor, I am completely overcome with delight at the beauty on the hillsides, banks, ditches, medians, esplanades, you name it. There is a riot of color which I don't recall noticing in years past. Are the govt crews more sensitive to natural beauty and putting more effort into scattering wildflower seeds along the highways?

Or is it an increase in rainfall that has reinvigorated what was already there?

For long stretches you can see primrose in every shade of white to cherry pink blanketing the medians. Bluebonnets are enthusiastic companions to Infian blankets, primrose, and some schoolbus yellow flowers and some neon yellow ones as well.

Thankful for the beauty.

I think it was the rainfall. Since the days of Ladybird Johnson, the TxDOT has been seeding the highways with wildflowers and wildflowers are notorious for surviving as seeds until the weather is right.

It is gorgeous, is it not? On a trip to college station recently, I really enjoyed the view

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Widseed farms has been keeping the medians colorful thru TxDOT- but am not sure about the rainfall amounts being any different along that corridor- Spring is so late even the dogwoods did their blooms as Easter progressed this year in many areas. May might be hard pressed to keep up with April this year...

I can only hope there is a DGer who knows somebody or has a relative that works at TXDot. They should know there was a lady online going on and on about the pretty highways. Everybody should know when their work is appreciated. So pls, pass the word.

As we got closer to Richmond the white poppies were overcrowding the bluebonnets, demanding their turn in the spotlight. I thought I'd be too tired when I got home but instead I went to the garden and started tidying up. All that beauty had me pumped up, LOL

My brother in law is a purchasing agent for one of the TxDOT regions. I will pass it along.

Plants are not as far along here as down in Houston, but many pretty ones are coming up,
I even saw Four nerve Daisy growing wild, which I had never seen before.

Yes marti, he needs to know

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I *think* it is increased moisture this year.

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

Actually it is a combination of both, plus
the colder winter.

Bluebonnets and others need to scarify,
and that happens naturally though freezes
and thaws.

/We have been in a drought, but the timing
of the rainfall helped to stimulate production
of flowers.

Each year more plantings increase.
Its all good !!!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Those pictures are amazing, did you take those? Wow!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

indeed, OH MY!!!

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

first one is old, second one sent to me by a friend,
taken at sunrise near Ennis, a few miles from here.

I am guessing the light at sunrise made those
blues pop. It IS breathtaking !

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Baja, will you post one of those on Facebook so I can share it, please?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it is one of the most beautiful I have seen.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

That first one of Baja's is one of mine from last year. It is a field that is very near my house. I wonder if this is the same field as the second. It is a field from last year near Ennis.
The second one is the field near my house this year.

Roux, re: 1st pic, I think it is the same vista as Baja's. Gorgeous! 2nd Pic: your property is a vision with all those bluebonnets, just spectacular

It's weird how the rain has hit certain areas but not others. It has rained all around us but not on us in weeks. We have been breaking heat records for the last few weeks, tonight we are looking at breaking the record for cold temps. Texas weather is amazing.

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

Lisa, we have had that happen in certain years too.

When there is rain it does keep average temps down.

Dallas, TX

Facebook? Do some of y'all have individual Facebook pages or is there a group page?

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

DG has a Facebook presence, and many of us are also on Facebook.

Oh. Didn't know. I'm not a big fan of what I refer to as the Dreaded Facebook. When my niece starting using it instead of emailing me pics of her daughter, the lovely Eliza, I was forced to use FB. I would probably like it better if I understood how it works. Since the 'help' screens aren't all that helpful, or FB changes the rules, I need a quick tutorial.

I am on facebook, its a love/hate relationship !

But once you get the hang of it, is is more good than bad.

DG on facebook: Fo getta boutit !

But many DGer and former DGers are on it.

Look me up: Baja Blue

hugs, Becky

Dallas, TX

I tried to look you up. Do you know how many hits I got on Baja Blue?

Tried again. Do you have 2 FB pages? One = Baja Blue and one = Becky G? Or do you have a split personality? (kidding) FB indicates that BB and BG are sisters but it hadn't occurred to me that one could have a nom de plume on FB. But of course. I don't 'friend' many people. Usually just ignore requests even if they are people I kinda know. But if you get a request from Joan, that would be me.
