Giant "ric rac" plant

Lula, GA

Linda/Ibartoo...........you shared a giant zig-zag or ric-rac type plant with me several years ago. I found the name somewhere back then, and since have lost it. You described it as spreading 8' across in your greenhouse. Do you remember what I am talking about?

Anyone else have any idea.........................the spread along the width of the leaves is about 4+" from one zig to the next zag!!!

Thanks!

Photo of leaf: The leaves tend to be a little flimsier than epie leaves. About a 12" rooted cutting.

Ooooh, that's great. I have found myself wanting these more and more. There are a couple of these in the plant files, maybe one of them is this one.

Is this the plant name you're looking for: Ric Rac Orchid Cactus (Epiphyllum anguliger)?

Hi Deebie, I think there are a couple of varieties of Ric Rac... I'm not sure these are the same.

Here it is with some major growth and that you so much Brenda for the rooted cutting... I hope we eventually get the name on this one..

Heres a great photo, they may be mature stems, but they sure look different than the other plant.

Just gorgeous ..

Brenda, I remember it well. I cut a lot of it back and shared cuttings.
I actually bought the original plant on ebay years ago. It is Selenicereus Anthonyanus.
Here's a link for you.

I found this description of the two. It helps me a lot. Has this one bloomed for either of you? And what color was the flower if it did.

Here's what I found on the web.

We have had quite a few confused email asking for more info on what is known as the "ric rac" epi!

Cryptocereus Anthonyanus (aka Ric Rac Epi)

The most commonly found "ric rac" (and the one usually identified by this name in my limited experience!) - is not actually and Epiphyllum at all but Cryptocereus Anthonyanus. this plant is super easy growing and produces incredible purple & white blooms. It can be prone to spotting. This is a species "Epi" (as in Epiphyte) and will grow very similar to the average epiphyllum perhaps requiring just slightly less water.

Epiphyllum Anguliger (aka Ric Rac? or "fishbone" Epi)

this variety is much less common than C. Anthonyanus and it is a species epiphyllum. Growth is VERY similar to C. Anthony and often mistaken! Beware when purchasing this variety on ebay that the seller has actually seen bloom photos or has experience with Epis. Blooms for this species Epiphyllum are a white/cream color (easily disctinguishable from C. Anthony) and stems are a bit more rounded on the curves of the foliage.

Weberocereus Imitans

This species Weberocereus plant also looks almost identical to the "ric rac" - though it is unlikely you would get this plant by accident because of it's rarity.

Epiphyllum Chrysocardium (aka "Golden Heart" or "fernleaf" or "sawtooth")

Another species Epi this type is easier to distinguish from the Ric Rac via the foliage that is much larger and pointer, this variety also grows thinner stems that much resemble a fern.

We have photos available of all of these varieties & are happy to share if your curious or questioning a purchase - Hopefully we will be able to load them into this guide shortly (some issues with ebay photo upload at the moment!)

This guide is for reference only & based on my interpretation & experience with these different varieties.

Please feel free to ask any questions at all or point out any errors if you disagree with anything stated - my aim was just to provide accurate info for everyone;)
