What Kind of Bird is This?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

For the past several years, a pair of birds has nested in the trees of a house down the block from us. There's usually at least 2 birds. I don't remember seeing them last year, but they're back this year and I finally got a picture. It's with my cell phone, so it's not the best quality, but it was the only way I could get a pic without it flying away.

Stephanie, it looks like a young blue heron. We have one that visits our neighborhood regularly. So strange.

I've been searching online for "migratory birds north central Texas", and I think it's a Yellow Crowned Night Heron.

Yes it is a night heron. They are beautiful birds.

Cool! We've had a pair or two that have spent a couple of weeks nesting in a huge oak tree down the street from us. There is a pond about 1/4 mile or less from our house, so I'm wondering if they feed there and return here. At the house where they nest, if it rains hard, the driveway fills with water at a low spot. They really like that!

Mother Nature is cruel, unless your at the top of the food chain. If there weren't predators the prey would increase in population until there are too many, then they would starve...

So - once they eat all your fish n frogs and koi,,,, they move to someone elses pond or return southward. I doubt they run out of anything but our fish...sigh. Was just the thought of restocking
