I now have a reason to keep this tree. The last 2 years I have had them around my yard. Gorgeous!!!!!
Sweetgum trees what a pain...till now
Good job! Are those luna moths?
Yes Luna moths :)
They're beautiful! A neighbor has a sweetgum tree, but I've not noticed any lunas since the first year we moved in. Wonder if it has something to do with the neighbor's outdoor kitty.
That could be it as I do notice them around areas I have lights on at night. Does anyone use insecticides? As I think that is a big thing also. I have lived here 25 years and only the last 2 have I seen them.
It would be a rare thing to find a Luna moth in Ft. Worth -- or Dallas, although there are records of them. They are found in the eastern part of the state and DFW is just a bit too far west for them to be common.

I bet you have some beautiful things we don't. I absolutely love them. He is still in my garage and he is not afraid of us at all. I touched him again when I just came in. He is so beautiful and so trusting :) God is truly amazing :)
Sandy, I suggest you also post on the hummingbird and butterfly forum. There is nothing more beautiful, IMO.Edited to say that it is hard to beat the beauty of a sweet gum tree in the fall. I dont consider them a pain. I grew up with two of them.

They are a pain because like today almost fell on one of the balls rolled under my foot and I almost fell. With all the wind we are having they are everywhere.
I will post him there :)
My wife always defended the SGB till she fell from one rolling under a foot so now I am free of Sweet Gums and also of 3K$ Money well spent I say
I agree as they can cause a bad fall. But not having the money I have atleast found a way to get along :) I will just be more careful and I love nature so I will live peacefully as I enjoy butterflies, hummingbirds, lizards etc. My neighbors probably think I am (I will use the word eccentric rotflol) as I talk to the creatures big and small. It is so cute because my David does also.
I think I have seen one here once. or found it in a flower bed, which means it is probably in a jar or envelope somewhere around here. I do have a sweetgum. Had some kind of moth divebombing my phone at night last week, but I was in arlington when that happened
Stephanie, as Dale said a very rare site for us up here. Herman took a photo several years back of one that came sailing by his balcony office and landed on a piece of equipment out at Eagle Mt. Lake FW Water Plant. It is the one I posted on DG bugfiles. There wasn't any showing for Tarrant Co. on BAMONA so I sent it in to them. In hind site it could have been from most anywhere because of all of the trucks bringing in equipment for the new plant.
That is true about being from anywhere. My friend brought here trailer to Baltimore to more David here last summer and when we opened the doors one was dead inside. I have him on my China cabinet. Too beautiful not to keep
