We had a freeze here with ice on 3/2 3/3.
At the time, I had buds on my brown turkey fig, plus a few asparagus shoots, a few leaves on my Boston ivy, and some nice hostas poking up in the shade. (Can you tell I'm a northern transplant?)
Everything froze back that night.
Now 3 weeks later everything is bouncing back except the fig. So I'm wondering if it's dead or just slow to recover from a late freeze like that. Any other fig owners in the Austin area having similar concerns?
Did freeze kill my fig?
Your tree may have frozen to the ground, was it small?
Our tree has frozen to the ground at least four times through the years and has always come back from the roots.
Just give it time, I am pretty sure it will rebound.
I'm happy to say the fig is coming back. It's 6 feet tall so I'm glad it didn't freeze to the ground. On 4/2 (a month after our icy freeze) I checked on it and noticed several small green dots where the plant was pushing out new buds. It looks like the ends of the branches (where the buds froze back) might be dead, but the plant itself is making a come-back.
Great! mine is leafing out too.
Mine is coming out also.
Now we can look forward to possibly getting
a fig or two before the songbirds get them !
Can't wait 'till mine are 6' tall. They seem to have taken the freezes well. So the Southern Mockingbirds and I will be in a battle again this coming fig season for the fruits!
