some one posted about using the dry molasses for nut sedge control ..Does anyone have more info mon this subject??
Dry Molasses
Read the link and like the first suggestion altho it would be difficult if not impossible.
On another gardening page on Facebook, a guy posted that he applies dry molasses to his yard every month and has almost no nut sedge. You could try that.
I've been reading on a lot of sites and they all say that dried molasses will kill nutsedge. They do say that you prob. will have to do repeat applications.
I bought a 40 lb bag a few days ago. Hope it kills other weeds also. Even if it doesn't, it will be good for the soil. I'm thinking about buying another bag b/c it's on sale at one of our local hardware stores.
How much was the 40lb bag I priced it at the CO-OP and it was $17.59 for a 50lb bag and I will get one tomorrow .
I don't have big nut sedge problem but after reading the Dirt Doctor article it sounds like it will do a lot of good everywhere..
Grits -you done good. I got a 40 lb bag of Nature's Guide Dried Molasses for $22. Maybe could have found it for a little less. Didn't check. If we could trust my memory (the flier is still in my car), I think it was $3 off regular price from the store I went to.
For those who might be reading this in the Dallas area, I bought it at Elliott's Hardware. Didn't bother to comparison shop b/c Elliotts is locally owned.
Been so cold here I have not had a chance to try the dry molasses fact is I haven't seen any nut sedge
Every time I plan to use the dry molasses the weather is not cooperating. Rain, wind, frost. I couldn't believe that I had to bring plants back in and cover others.
I have seen some nutsedge but also want to use the molasses just to make everything else happy. It's still windy today so will have to wait a little longer. Not sure where Talihina is, but do have experience with wind in OK!
Talihina is in Southeast Oklahoma due west from Mena Ar. and north of Paris Tx. we have had some wind recently but is not like western Ok.
Ok. I pulled up all (ha!) the nutsedge in my parkway. Finished yesterday. Had already started spreading the dried molasses b/c I didn't know if it would kill above ground or only underground. Verdict for now is NOT above ground altho I might not have given it enough time. Am going to put down rest of molasses in spots that I dug up yesterday. Will keep y'all posted.
Oh, dear. Bad news. I'm starting to see something green sprouting in the area where I first started pulling up the nutsedge and had spread molasses. Hope this doesn't continue. Sigh.
Gotta go ahead and seed the area with ThunderTurf! (great name, eh?) which is a combo of native grasses, mostly buffalo grass. Maybe it will smother any nutsedge. Ok. I can hear y'all snickering now.
Grits - I bought more dried molasses last week at a different store. This was a 50 lb. bag for $23. So you've still done good in Talihina.
Ton of seeds waitin chances to sprout, or come out when the coadt is clear. Give the turf time to get established.
If you don't get the "nut" at the bottom, then it will come back. The molasses helps break up the soil so it won't root, thereby making it stop growing.
I got a lot of the nuts, including one that was almost the size of a pecan! But one never knows when one gets all the nuts attached to just one nutsedge as they keep going down after getting the first one and they also are nice enough :D to grow sideways too.
Should I throw anything else on top of the molasses before seeding? I'm getting conflicting answers from the so-called 'experts'. Always welcome another opinion.
