The plant in this picture stayed green all winter through our harsh freezes. I think it is the elderberry that I got from Dennis at the Spring Roundup. Do they normally stay green through the winter?
I need to move this from the backyard, since we just got two puppies and I read that elderberries can be toxic if chewed. I'm looking for a new spot out front and wondered if it would make a good screen for our front seating area. It's grown a LOT in the past month!
Are Elderberry bushes evergreen in DFW?
My elderberry...and I have 5 types...are evergreen all year...we are south of you about 3 hours.
Mine are usually evergreen here in DFW, but this year the leaves got burned by the cold. They are growing again with no problem.
Yes I think they would make a good screen, since they sucker from the ground and spread.
I've heard they can be toxic too but I know elderberries are used in cooking...what am I missing?
They are not toxic after cooking,
i cut mine to the ground every year and they come back,if I do not cut them back they just get messy looking>>txaggiegirl what variety do you have and which do you like best..I want some others but keep waffling on the choice..
Thanks Josephine & txaggiegirl! Now that I know they'll stay green, I may be asking for more at the next roundup, if anyone has some to share.
1lisac - Wikipedia says, "Leaves, stems, roots, and unripe fruits of S. canadensis are toxic due to the presence of cyanogenic glycosides and alkaloids." Our puppies are chewing on everything at the moment, so I'm being extra cautious with backyard plants.
Thanks, I have seen the uncooked but ripe fruit used as garnishes....but also been told that they are toxic. But they sound like a lot of "berries" that I've read about but never tried to grow...Ground Cherriies have similar warnings. But I have eaten tons of ripe Ground Cherries and I'm still here.
Carol, I can supply you with as many as you need let me know.
Josephine - me, too! Please.
I must be confusing elderberries with some other berry b/c I used to eat them long time ago. Probably I asked someone what the name of the berry was and they told me wrong. Who knows. Whatever berries I ate were really good and very very messy. And as anyone can tell by my typinggggg ther not ill effected. Wright?
O.K. some for you too.
Thank you. And I think the frostweed cutting that you gave me at the RU has survived. I'm glad you told me to just let it be. I'm seeing some green leaves popping out. Haven't leaned way down for a close look, but the leaves appear to be kinda fuzzy.
Do dewberries grow in Texas and are they edible? If so, that might be what I'd been thinking of when I said I thought I'd eaten elderberries.
Josephine, would 10 be too much to ask? We have a long side yard where we would like a privacy hedge. It's in full sun.
I will see if I can manage it after the sale on the 5th.
BTW, don't think I'll make the sale if traffic is going to be as dire as predicted by the Dallas Morning News. There's the basketball deal in Arlington, Nascar in Ft. W (?), and something else sports related. All that weekend. Ack.
I have a lot of elderberry volunteers, too.
Can they be mailed?
Thanks Josephine & Dennis! Any amount you can spare will be greatly appreciated!!
