Dallas Arboretum

Mesquite, TX

Visited the Arboretum this week and although they have quite a bit of construction going on here and there, it was still well worth the trip. Lots of color and their special feature of the season, two huge floral peacocks, were outstanding. If you can spare a few hours, it's well worth the trip.
Sample pics are attached.

Yup, the Dallas Arboretum is always a great place to visit. Love the picture of the giant 'bird'. Swan? Mother Goose?

Whatever that big bird is, if you like it, take a gander over to the thread I posted called Mosaiculture.

I was about to post something new here but then I reread the original post. So I guess the picture I asked about was a pic of one of the floral peacocks. My bad for skimming.

What I do want to let folks know is something I just saw in the Dallas Morning News. I'm not sure what the original end date was for 'Dallas Blooms' at the Arboretum, but it has been extended through April 20. There's a note that reads "$1 off discounted tickets available at Tom Thumb stores." (Does that mean that one should have a discounted ticket to get the additional dollar off? Probably not. Must be someone else's bad. And my bad for being silly.) Also says "visit the website for additional deals and discounts."

Website is www.DallasArboretum.org.

Tom Thumb usually has always some flyers by the Customer service desk with discount coupons.
Ex. I found a $2 off for the DFW home and garden show ... or $1 for another convention.
Always check their desk.

I am a member of the Dallas Arboretum. I always want to make sure that I renew my membership to support them. They are just amazing.

My next visit to the Arboretum will be during their ART SCAPE show !
The artist are very high quality and i always come home with a treasure.

We joined the Arboretum for our first year here, the year they had the Chihouly exhibit. We went several/many times that year. How is the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens in comparison?

Mesquite, TX

The Ft. Worth Arboretum is excellent and quite distinct from the Dallas version, at least to me. Be sure and visit the Japanese Gardens while you're there. The FWBG also has an enclosed area in one of the main buildings that features more tropical specimens, bromeliads, etc., as well as usually one or two "museum" type exhibits.

If you ever get to Seattle, be sure and check out the permanent Chihouly collection at Space Needle Park which has glass sculptures both inside and outside by the artist.
For that matter, the Butterfly house (exhibit) at the TX State Fair Grounds in Dallas is always worth an outing too. New arrivals and hatchlings are released at noon each day. If you visit, I'd suggest afternoon hours since mornings are pretty much devoted to elementary and kindergarden school outings and it can get quite crowded and noisy with all the little heathens running in and around the paths.
Cautionary statement: Last time we visited the fairgrounds (not at State Fair time), it appears that you now have to pay an entry fee to visit the Aquarium and other year round buildings. Not terribly expensive per venue but if you plan to spend the afternoon visiting the buildings, it can put a sizable dent in your wallet.

Thanks for the pretty photos. I'd love to get over there sometime!

The American Rose Society has reciprocating discounts, but I can't seem to get onto the Members Only part of the website to see if the Dallas Arboretum in on the list. Something to check before going if you all are member of ARS or any other plant or gardening societies.

terri - i've had similar problems with other sites and this just reminded me that I need to make a few phone calls. i think somewhere there's a master list of who reciprocates with who, but dunno what or where it is. please update this thread if you find a master list. and if i find out anything by phone i'll send an update.

-or- should this be a new thread or perhaps a sticky? or maybe there is one somewhere in this huge database of info.

gotta go b/c they're playing buddy holly on the radio and my cat and i have to dance.
