Taken this morning in my community garden plot in Palo Alto, California ... I think the bird on the right is a White-Crowned Sparrow, and I figured the one on the left was the female of the species ... but now I'm not sure. Anyone can help me out here? Thanks, if you can!
Yes, the bird on the right is a White-crowned and it very well could be a female. Most North American Sparrow genders look the same. There will be individual differences in size and coloring, but it doesn't indicate gender.
The bird on the left is a Fox Sparrow, a great little bird. We so rarely see them. You got a very nice picture.
Thank you so much, Chillybean! There was quite a little gathering of both types of birds at my garden yesterday! I was quite happy to catch two of them in the bird bath!

And, I think, that Chillybean means in this instance that its a "wonderful" little bird, as opposed to a "large" little bird ... therefore that would not qualify as an oxymoron, right?
