Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

I would like positive ID on this attractive bird that abounds in the winter in my yard. Thanks

Yes... Dark-eyed Junco! Love those little winter birds! Had over ten of them hopping around my feeding station yesterday.

Yes, it looks like a Dark- eyed Junco puffed up because of the cold. Here in Colorado, quite a bit of color variation is normal - so they may not all be exactly that color.

In Middle Tennessee we have lots like this and some that have more brown than grey/black. They're both cute, but... I prefer the darker ones cause they remind me of tiny penguins! :-)

Yep, Dark-eyed Junco, of the Slate-colored subspecies.

I prefer the name "snowbird". Junco sounds too much like "junkie"; and after 32yrs as an E.R. nurse, well - snowbird sounds so much sweeter! :)

I get a bunch of these every winter. They love white millet & thistle. I'm thinking this winter, with all the snow & bitter cold, they probably wished they had stayed up in Alaska! I heard there were several times it was actually warmer up there. There have been fewer of them lately, tho, so yeah - spring is on the way!
