Ready for SPRING..............
Ready for SPRING..............
That's my sentiments exactly!!!
I'm with you
Me too.
So ready for this cold weather to leave!
Lol! She's my hero ;)
14 degrees outside right now, and to think it was 84 Saturday!!
High 70s yesterday and now it's 23 and snowing. I am gardening though. I've been sorting through the hardier herbs and vegetables to try this. We have seen more snow this winter and colder temps but these plants don't seem to protest. They may not grow as quickly but will take off on the few warmer sunny days we've seen.
I have raised beds for vegetables that are full of winter herbs like cilantro, savory, chervil, dill, fennel. Also onions, lettuce, chards, spinach, radishes and carrots. I have potatoes in one bed, strawberries growing and blooming in another.
Granted it is not flowers or landscaping but it soothes the gardening urge and is so rewarding when I go out and harvest salad fixings for dinner.
I have six San Marzano tomato plants in the ground, mounded tons of leaves and topped with a pot, we were only supposed to get to 30, then 29, and it was 27 when we got done with chores. Don't know what it actually got down to, my phone says 20, Dave's says 25 with a 32 mph north wind. Feels like 5 degrees. I am not feeling good about this. I had my lights on in the greenhouse and now think I should have drug out the heater.
No snow, but the steps were icy last night and several gate latches were already frozen. We didn't think to turn a light on with the pump and didn't have but a trickle this morning. Got that cleared out, and now to head out to see the damage. May lose some lambs to this, getting wet then chilled is tough.
I am so ready for this to be over.
I am sorry to hear about the lambs, that is sad. Hoping they will all be fine.

The green leaves of things like turnips, beets, collards, etc at 3" length is great for improving your blood in this winters end coming thru. and this is the weather they thrive best in. We froze. At 10am it was still a 29* windchill and I watched plants that have survived all else freeze now. My plants weren't coming out of dormancy yet and the ones that were, I piled oak leaves on top of before the rain. Spring is really delayed this year- seems like more than the 6 wks it has been lately. More coming in tonite, all the way to Houstons Gulf this time. Gardening in snow- well, snow insulates, provides the chill hours some plants require and the moisture they will need at the proper time. You just need to know your garden well enough to know where you planted when you threw seeds in the snow. I am cold now. Where is my hot tea cup...
Kittriana ~ are you home now? Hope so, the roads are bad further north.
Joy ~ I am 150 miles to the northeast of you. I am surprised and sad that you got hit that hard. To have the water freeze up is miserable enough. To lose lambs is tough. So sorry. Kristi
Home til Wed am, then back to the northern roads. We will see if Joy actually does lose any to cold-winds are the worst- many new calves and lambs are hitting ground now.
Every cold front has been different this year, the conditions have been dry brittle to wet slush and the winds have been killers. Temps horridly low. Cant judge a road by what you are accustomed to this year at all. Just dealing with hanging on til April, with luck all this cold stuff wont bring a busy tornado season...
Well, I for one, am late starting seeds so am hoping for a mild summer. Yeah right!
Glad you were home this time. Minnesota brother says it has been steadily ugly.
That is really cute MorganC.
We lost two today, one old ewe and a week old lamb. Both were in the high risk percentage, but it is still tough. Now they are calling for more rain after midnight and it is already 31.
I am sorry about your losses Joy.
Sleeted here all day on Sunday and the temp got down to single digits overnight yesterday we never got above 20° ..the street in front of our house is solid ice...Did not need this .....
I am so sorry you have lost any of them, old or young. Who would of thought that would be an issue with livestock this far south. I hope you suffer no more losses.
Grits ~ in your hills and hollers, you sure don't need it. May I thank you for keeping it up there!?!!
Kitt did you get the seeds??? If not let me know
I had a set of triplets and a single (goats) born on last week and then the single on Saturday. So far so good....I've kept them locked up with their mommas in a stall inside a three sided goat shed with a dog kennel/igloo to cuddle up in. But one of the girls just won't stay in that igloo. She's just hopping all over the place. Guess she'll go in when she gets cold. I finally get two girls this season and one of them doesn't seem to have sense to get in out of the cold!
Sorry to her you've lost a couple, Joy. Hope it warms up soon!
YES I did grits!!! I did, I did- and was so tickled to have them come. Why do you name yours rampicante tho- the excess length maybe?
That is awesome terri_ maybe shes just too full of motion to get cold...???
My sheep and guardian dogs prefer to be outside, you know when it is bad when they opt to be in a shed. Last night both El and Boo were curled up on the ground with a layer of ice on their backs, happy as a clam at high tide. This morning, however, everyone had retreated to drier beds. Sox had tons of icicles in her mane and tail and was standing in the sleet feeling like she was back in Canada without the bitter cold.
I have two does who are close to kidding, I was hoping they didn't go early and they didn't. Whew.
I can't keep my girls in I either Terri, they are too nosy.
I was worried about the triplets as this is that doe's first kidding. But she seems to be doing fine, all three babies are gaining weight. I have both new mothers in one stall due to the bad weather crunch. Last night the mom with one baby (a girl) was also nursing the baby girl from the triplets. So that must be the answer. At least it is working out. Half of my pastures are still frozen solid, the other half pretty wet. So I let everyone but the new moms and babies out this morning. Supposed to be in the high 40's today so everything should finally thaw. I hope when I get home from work tonight I can finally let the new moms and babies out into the pasture to stretch their legs, they appear to be ready for it! I'll try and get some photos, too.
I sure am ready for 40's and 50's!
I hope you all are thawing out and the sun is shining where you are...
Terri
Sorry for your losses Joy. This kind of weather I'm glad I only have chickens, and adult ones that that. Hoping for some spring.
I've been busy ordering seeds from everywhere. So I have about 10,000 or more seeds and can't plant them yet. Grrrrrrrrr.
I am sooo ready for spring.
This was our Mandarin Orange Tree leaves the other morning.
Keep warm everybody.....and I am sending warm loving thoughts to all our animal friends out there.
Kitt Someone here on daves said that the Rambicante Zuccetta literally translates to Rampaging Zucchini so It does fit
Its the rampicante I wondered about since I am seeing a different name for the trombone zucchini elsewhere- yours appears to be a larger variety than the other ones I find is all, and I had wondered where you had found them...
I ordered them from Pine Tree seeds originally but have just saved the since then
they may not be the best eating but they are reliable> they snear at the borers and give the single finger salute to the other squash eaters
That is what I am lookin for! Have already got em shared around the family to grow, chuckl. Seeing rain down in Tx this mornin- may not can direct sow, but tater plantin and seed startin in trays would be good now. Daylite Savings snappin in this weekend- you guys get some rest tonite!!!!
I started tomato seeds from tomatoes, a variety called Juliette, and pepper seeds from my golden bell peppers that I got seeds from Annie's to grow. I either had no $ to order seeds with, or once I had $ no time. They are sprouting. When I order I will order for next year and refrigerate them when they come I think
