Enough Already!!!

Arlington, TX

Ok this is getting a bit crazy. My plants are finally growing and now 2 nights below freezing and possible freezing rain forecast. How much can the poor things take. I have covered and uncovered my cactus 4 times so far and it looks like tomorrow will be the fifth time. Just needed to vent...

Its the law of life : What doesn't kill you, will make you stronger.

It applies to plants as well. This has been a terrible winter, but these things cycle through our
lives. Last year everyone was saying how badly we needed a cold winter to kill the bugs.
Well, here we are ! I hope this will tamper down the skeeters and West Nile virus.

All we can hope for is that our outside plants will make it through. Ths cold will actually help
some of them. Now, we need to pray for rain !

Skeeters and rain frogs in full tilt down here in Houston area. Seeing a lot of ice damage that happened, but we will see how far south this Titan rolls

Holy cow, 85 on Saturday and 25 on Sunday?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Welcome to Texas, we are supposed to have it all, after all! Chuckle. Someone turn off the a/c please?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

DH says if they use up the whole alphabet (U, V, W, X, Y and Z) they're not allowed to have any more storms this season.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Chucklin hard- he WISHES!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

He does. He was up all night (Sat night) saying "have they called the deicing trucks yet? Did they call the hotel and make sure the shuttle's running? Are there cancellations?"

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

De icers? in DFW? R I G H T. You can access Texas 511 for puter info on road closures, road conditions, I have an eye on it now, but think I will be in behind it to get back to driving, it has several choices when you see the site-is that what you are checking? http://highwayconditions.com/tx/ or calling(which drivers haunt when weather is bad)

Can someone who knows how to copy a photo on DG, go over to the voting booth about March coming in like a lion, scroll down to KyWoods photo of an error message and copy it here. It belongs here. I tried but could not remember how to do it.

(Joy) Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Can't do it on my iPad. Doesn't recognize it as a photo for some reason.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Can You simply repost the pic here Marty? Not sure if anyone but admin can copy, but will attempt

Is that more-or-less what you were looking for? The real way to do it would be to copy her image and save it to your computer then "browse" and find it on your own computer.

And yes, they de-ice at DFW airport. Once last winter, many more times this winter. The problem is that they don't do it often enough to really know what they're doing.

Here we go....I realized that this could be useful to have in cases of slow Spring.

Crazy? You wanna talk crazy? Listening to the local DFW weather reports on Sunday evening, I learned that we were having 'thundersleet storms'. Yup. Thundersleet.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Thundersnows and thundersleets are springtime- usually - phenoms, You have them much more often in the northern states. But Dallas has had proper conditions this year, for you to hear those terms. just sayin

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Remember how you used to hear that the Innuit had 17 (or 25 or 32) words for snow? I think we're getting there. We have hail and snow and rain, then we have sleet and freezing rain and frozen ice pellets and snow showers and flurries and thundersnow and thundersleet. My favorite is falling slush. I haven't heard anyone else use it yet but I think it's just a matter of time! ^_^

Dallas, TX

Carrie - You missed one but I won't remember exactly what it was until days from now. It was something like 'snow fog'. I definitely know it had the word 'fog' in it but combined with something else, making it a new word to me. And I've lived in cold climates before. Ok. One doesn't count b/c I was a kid and only paid attention to whether it would be cold enough so that we could stay home from school. (Once my mom said we could stay home if it was -20. Much to our dismay, it was -19 and we were bundled off to school.)

These pictures were taken in my garden on march 1st.
All the daffodils standing up and my tomatoes inside the hoop house enjoying the weather.

This is the next day, dropping to 16F after ice pellets came down from the sky ...

ohhhh
I don't know if I will harvest any onions this year ... they just don't seem to grow.
90% of my tomatoes did make it ... a miracle !!

Such a strange weather this year !

I wonder how the Dallas Arboretum is doing right now !
They did open the "Dallas in blooms" festival already this year.

Dallas, TX

Yes, 'Dallas Blooms' is being heavily promoted. Maybe I'll see what their website says. Will let you know if it says anything remarkable.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Dont give up hope. My dogwood after the ice covered it for a day, a hard rain followed by a heavy hard rain a week ago laid the paperwhites over, the ice just finished their laying all the way down, they had their blooms mostly spent tho.

My Columbines which are quite hardy were really hit by the low temps, probably will have to cut them back.
Many other plants that were starting to grow were also nipped, but surprisingly the Phlox wasn't hurt.
This is a very strange winter indeed!!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I never seen such a damage by the weather since I moved here (10 years ago).
It looks like somebody poured "acid" on my flowers ...

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

The late 80's were awful as well. There are always stories and worries when the freezes go far enough and deep enough south that The Valley (in Tx) gets wiped out and has to rebuild. Because of the weather, do not be surprised to see different natives of Tx than usual.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I remember it going down to zero, and also snow on Easter Sunday, very strange.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Just about all the newly awake stuff got zapped last week when it got down to 13 degrees overnight (Garanitica, Possum Haw Holly, Cowpen Daisies). They will be back, hopefully. The Aster and Coreopsis seem to be fine. But what we REALLY need is rain. If we don't get some serious rain soon, it won't matter what things weathered this horrible winter. Blah!
