A cardinal looking bird in back yard peach tree. What is it?
CLOSED: Peach tree bird ID ?
That's a Pyrrhuloxia
Found in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico & northern Mexico. It's in the same genus as the Northern Cardinal.
Sorry OldNed, but I'd beg leave to differ - it's a female Northern Cardinal; the secondaries as well as the primaries are reddish (just the primaries in Pyrrhuloxia), and the bill is conical, not rounded, stubby as in Pyrrhuloxia. As the bill isn't bright red, presumably an immature.
It also has a bad case of feather mites around its head.
Resin
In other words. one sick looking bird. Thanks guys.
I agree with Resin, bill is wrong for Pyrrhuloxia. That's a female Northern Cardinal with feather mites (which occur often with our Cardinals).
