impossible planting area

Frisco, TX(Zone 8a)

Whoever poured the driveway at my MIL's house 30 years ago left a narrow ( about 12 inches) strip of soil. It been a mess since then and now that I am taking care of her garden for her I finally can do something with it. I've tried mondo grass and dwarf Katie ruellia with some success. Is there anything else I can try or just replant those that didn' t make it?
I've amended the soil enough that it is Ok. It is next to the house so is in partial shade. There is someone that comes in daily now so I can have new plantings watered ( I think that was one of my problems the last two years)

You could try Ruellia nudiflora a very strong and reliable plant.

Also some of the wild Violets.

I hadn't thought of wild violets. I have plenty I could move there. Thanks!
