Night Herons

Mesquite, TX

Black Crowned Night Herons. Adult (gray and white) and juvenile (brown with streaked breast).
Their blood red eyes are spooky but apparently aid in the spotting of prey during the darker hours of the day and night when they are the most active hunters.

I think they are beautiful birds.

Great photos! Glad you made the "mistake". We have some kind of heron that has lived in our neighborhood for many years. People will see him crossing the street at night occasionally. Dont know his story. Curious tho.

steady, there are really only about a half dozen herons that frequent TX so it shouldn't be too hard to identify if you so chose later on.

Caught a couple of juveniles trying to roost in my trees one day. Identified them as Yellow-crowned Night Heron. The adult however looks nothing like this, it is very beautiful.
