Caladiums for shade

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

If you're waiting for spring, as the snow flies for much of the nation, you can check out the ad by Bill, the DG caladium guy, here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1345798/

It's a great way to spend a few hours planning for the best foliage from July to frost.

They're excellent at hiding the spent Asiatic lily stalks and he offers a wide variety for both sun and shade.

Pirl: How much supplemental water do caladiums require? I usually plant them in pots, but your post made me start thinking about other spots for them....

We have an irrigation system so they don't get any extra water at all - ever.

With a good layer of mulch I doubt you'll need any extra water unless you hit a very long dry spell.

This one, from 2012, didn't need any extra water and performed beautifully. The caladium is Florida Fantasy.

When you say yours don't get extra water -- don't they get water from your irrigation system???

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

No, they're not in the area covered since they are on the terrace. They get rain. That's it. The impatiens was always a good sign as a companion plant since it's quick to indicate when it's thirsty.

The pots of caladiums I had in gardens were all self watering pots (Walmart, cheap) and the irrigation system did very well by them. The reason for using those pots was so I could move them, if needed, and could always monitor the rain they got or the water they needed.

pirl.... yanno how every year I miss your post in January about Bill's sale / AD

well, yesterday i was down in Sebring having lunch with friends, and thought... what the heck, Bill is right down the road. [Plus I have another friend in Lake Placid]

So i popped in to his little shop / warehouse. Met the pooches and Bill.

As I did lift bulbs last season, i may have enough to get me thru this year ... which will be a hugely busy year for me for various reasons.... one being, we are under contract in a house in FLA -- where DH will be closing in May.

So I told Bill I will be back in about a year to stock my yard with his gorgeous bulbs. I'd like to get EE's too. He told me I will not have to lift them in the winter months, which i was glad to hear.

Maybe it's genetic and that's why you don't catch my announcement!

Bill is such a nice guy and so helpful. Have fun buying for your new property next year.

I couldn't find anything about Bill's bulbs here on DG. Sorry!

If someone out there has a clue please let us all know about it.
