winter sowing?

Hello!
I was wondering if anybody has tried winter sowing seeds here? Does it work?
Any tips?

I just started last year; had great success with a good number of plants, but not all. I have put out more this year. I like to use flats of 4" pots. I cover the planted seeds with chicken grit.
