Pollinating Double Brugmansia

FSH, TX

Pollinating Double Brugmansia tips. Gently split flower/Corolla open to the base where the stigma is attached. Slowly peel this away from the base of where the seeds will form. One need not pull, just gently tug to remove this. If one needs to tug simply leave it for a day or so torn like this after one has pollinated the tip of the stigma. 2-3 days later one should be able to give a gently tug and the flower/corolla and calyx/green thing will slide off around the stigma leaving it attached. Doubles generally set seed best when they are at least 4 ft tall and mostly woody to the 4ft mark or better. Pollen from Doubles does not appear to be very fertile at all in most instances, but appears to be much better during colder months from my experience. Hope this helps would be hybridizers....Leaving the Corolla/flower(Colored part/petals etc attached on a double often weights the pistal down a bit too much and can lead to rot of the base of the pistal/stigma if left on and hence aborting any seedpod attempts.
Crossing a Double Orange or Double pink to an aurea and perhaps another to a suaveolens...crossing the two would in my oppinion result in some very nice hybrids. Just food for thought for those of you interested in crossing the doubles...
Bicolored doubles, doubles with larger/wider flaring skirts, etc....Those are the things I know others are dreaming of and one day they will be a reality.

Thanks so much, brugman. most of my double white has been cut back, and the rest will be gone by this weekend. My pollinating for the year is over.
I'm looking forward next years growing season. I have high hopes of getting seeds to set on the double. I'm really anxious to try a seedling that i got from gloria that came from seeds she got from germany (?) Waltraud, maybe? it hasnt bloomed for me, but its lost alot of its ugly leaves and seems to be putting out true brug leaves.
I'm still waiting for the pod on the frosty pink to completely ripen. Its still green and hard, no softening at all.
One more question. At what point should i remove the petals?
Thanks bunches

Thanks for the info.I may have two blooming at the same time soon.Neither a double though. One is Jutner Orange, the other Arlene's Mystery Pink.I am hopeing for my first try at crossing.

My x knightii has another bloom ready to open. I'll try crossing it with the peaches and cream. Might make for an interesting combination. What do you think?

Brugcrazy, I think that might be interesting if you were going for a varigated Double in color.
Gone2seed, I think that is a most wonderful type cross your are trying as well. Absolutely stunning...both good crosses.
As for when to remove petals/corolla,flower-asap without damaging pistal.
