Joy, that purple fuzzy salvia is awesome. Do you know it's name?
Marty, I have had it many years but I think it is purple velvet, Mexican Bush Sage, salvia leucantha. I got it from Arbor Gate and they called it Mexican Sage. It is wide, and my only complaint is that it doesn't start blooming till fall, but it can bloom all winter if we have a mild one or it is reasonably protected. Mine is in the NW corner of the yard so it takes a beating in the winter. I am planning on putting some in the back yard nearer the house, SSE, to see if I can enjoy it longer. The bees really love it, I love the fuzz, so it will always be a staple in my garden.
Beautiful Sweet Mommy. Hate that about the MG's. I have those "Heavenly Blue" and they are so pretty. Do the butterflies use the red passiflora as a host or is its purpose just to be beautiful?
I don't know. I lost my older purple one at the beginning of the summer and replaced it with this one so it was never big enough to attract anything. At least, I hope that's why I didn't have any GFs.
Home and out of the icy DFW. Shudder.
Loquat, Turks Cap, Mexican mint marigold, Dogwood tree under the oaks and pines and sweetgums, Texas everlasting sage is coming back up from roots, but that purple salvia is woody and hasnt folded like the red salvia.
humidity 100% with a windchill of 40*. Heater set on 64 to keep my wet toes warmer...
Welcome home, Kitt! That loquat pix is gorgeous. I lusted after the MMM until finally I got one about 5 years ago and the dang thing wont bloom. One year I got 3-4 blooms. This year so far, nothing.
This one was 8yrs old before it did any decent growing or blooming- Now we get blooms several times a year- it is a bit overloaded with blooms and the branches are drooping- I did throw some of the fertilizer I get for the Dogwood and a soil acidifier around it, but I dont remember why...may have been using up the bag. Its whole purpose here is the aroma, kinda cold and wet to smell right now.
I apologize for the poor quality of the pics, I used my cell phone and it just doesn't do well when it is overcast. But I have several of my antiques that are blooming yet again.
My front gate roses, Souvenir de la Malmaison are starting up again, it smells wonderful when you open the gate.
The Smith's Parson rose in my front yard is suffering from something chewing the buds but still has a few making it to full bloom.
The yellow Nacodoches had been a disappointment all fall but now has 5 and 6" blooms covering it.
Maggie has never stopped, intense perfume, and every wave produces bigger fuscia blooms.
And my first paper whites, they were in the throw away bin at Wally World and I couldn't let that happen.
Beautiful roses Joy! And Im glad you rescued the paperwhites. They are too pretty to lose.
I love rescuing reject paperwhites as they invariably show their appreciation by blooming w/o skipping a beat. And speaking of paperwhites, here are my Dec harbingers.
2) copper canyon daisies. How I love this plant. greenery growing thru it is lycoris aurea foliage
3) snapdragon. My fave neighbor said they were perennials for her, just keep very moist. I did that and here they are in their 2nd year
4) rosa Queen Elizabeth
5) Christmas w/o poinsettia? impossible!
Wonderful and colorful pictures Joy and Vossner.
You down south girls are lucky that your weather is warmer at this time of year.
here is a curly red poinsettia I got at Franks Nursery, a local retailer in Richmond TX. The new blooms are so curly and round and tight but they open a little bit, as days go by. here are two pics. My neighbor came over and thought they were fake, the blooms were so unusual.
another novelty was this orange poinsettia that I saw at HD in early Dec. They were ORANGE, though my cp did not capture the color. I was in a hurry on another mission and couldn't get a plant. A couple of days later, they were gone. I hope somebody who got one can post here and attest to its orangeyness, lol
Thanks, I really love my antiques. If the rain stops, I will post a pic of my green rose. It is very happy, starting to grow and now blooming. I have one milkweed that must have its own micro climate. It hasn't stopped blooming its yellow flowers. It's the only one I have ever seen that just has yellow. I even saw a single duranta bloom this morning.
Vossner, you are lucky with snap dragons. They are one of those plants I cannot grow. Those are lovely poinsettias.
Josephine, what is this? I picked one earlier and can't remember where I saw it, although I did get this picture.
Joy, It looks like the shamrock or oxalis called iron cross. The markings are not perfect but I think that is what it is.
joy, I used to same the same re: snaps. try planting in a wet spot and wait to be surprised.
ditto what marty said re: iron cross. used to grow it and over a few years markings disappeared and reverted to a common version.
Vossner, are these native paper whites? I found an unknown bulb and planted it not knowing what to expect. Funny, it's planted right next to the WalMart ones.
And what is this? I had a ziplock bag of seeds that I broadcast with no label and I see these scattered all around my beds so I was wondering weed? Although it doesn't seem so.
They uploaded backwards,
Joy if it isnt oxalis, it could be sorrel. Both are up. Narcissus/daffodils - same kissin kin. Let me know what the little one is, it looks familiar but dont think I have that one. Neglect is trick to snaps.
Joy they remind me of alpine strawberry or wild strawberry. One's a weed the other not.
My best guess is my paper whites came from holland. Do have some old ones from old tx fields but so far skimpy bloomers. Prob resented transplant
The unknown plant looks like Columbine to me but not sure.
I also thought about Columbine, joy.
Feed the skimpy bloomers same fert as onions, but they bloom better 3rd yr in ground...
