I took some quite decent images of a small raptor today. The possible issue here is that small raptor is also accompanied by the field mouse it just caught and later ate. I also have some images of the same raptor sans mouse but to me at least, hunter/prey sequences are more interesting to a degree than the same bird just sitting there "posing".
Wanted to check with the populace here to see what was allowed, what was tolerated, and what made you go EWWWWW! and close your eyes before quickly hitting the back arrow. I certainly don't want to offend anyone's senses but also note that what might be a hit image/image sequence on one board can also bring quite nasty comments on another.
Just checking before I post although there are several images in the set that precede the really gory parts.
Your opinions?
Thanks
Steve
Question about showing images with natural life and death.
Personally, I am ok with raptor/mouse, but do cringe at raptor/bird photos. I like birds, so it is hard to see the things we enjoy being eaten by bigger birds. I've taken photos of raptors with rodent prey, though they are not very good. And we had a Cooper's Hawk dine on what we believe was a Grackle or Cowbird while we were eating our supper. It was just outside the window and even though we do not like seeing birds eating birds, we thought it was neat seeing the raptor so close to the house. S/he ate the whole thing, just leaving behind a few feathers.
We see the Accipiters here now and again, but not so much any more. We use to go out and scare them away, but realized they are trying to survive just like the little feeder birds. More often now we see Harriers, Red-tailed and Kestrels hunting the pasture and surrounding area. And yes, I agree with you, posing birds are nice, but I do like when I can get some type of action.
Have you seen Crossley's Raptor ID Guide yet? He has a few raptor and prey photos in that book.
Chilly,
I've not seen the Crossley's Guide but will look for it to add to my bird book collection. Wife was a school librarian before retirement so that's one item I can buy as much of and as often as I want and never get the evil eye over a purchase.
I learned early to ask before posting certain photos with much depending on the poster base and how tolerant they are of certain subject matter. I grew up respecting nature and while a few things still give me pause, on the whole not much bothers me regarding same, at least not like people's antics and behavior bother me. We all gotta eat whether it's grass or other living things and that's the way I take it.
I appreciate your response...
Steve
Steve, I think if you give viewers a heads-up that you are posting a series of graphic images, it should be OK. People can then choose to view them or not. Have a read of the "stickies" at the top of the page and you'll get a better idea of what's considered acceptable. Unless I've missed something, I don't think such images would breach any standards here.
(I'm an osprey tragic but still can't bring myself to watch an osprey eating its live catch from the lips backward.)
I didn't even think about bothering people when I posted a picture of a chipmunk eating a snake on the Nuts about Squirrels thread in Wildlife. I am glad that I didn't get some negative replies. I guess if I had posted it on a snake thread I may have heard about it. I would be bothered if I saw a photo of a hawk eating a dove like they do here - picking off Mourning Doves feeding on the ground or posting a photo of the ripped off head that they leave behind..
Different things bother different people and I suppose all of us have favorite animals but in the natural world, this kind of stuff happens every day, we just typically don't see it.
That's why I wanted to ask first.
Thanks for your response.
Steve
Fine by me.
