Bufflehead ducks

Drakes and hens, about a dozen or so but very wary of passersby.

Buffleheads are the birds most likely to take fright & flight on the river here, too. I decided they just like to have an excuse to fly upstream and float back down.

Saw a pair on the river in Essex, MA this afternoon. Male was fishing--they can really stay under the water for a long time.
