Seedling...the first flower.

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

I purchase the seed from Alan at Hurstwood Brugmansia. It is a cross of Hurstwood Bryony x Amethyst.
The plant is 45" tall right now. A great size for me to move outside in summer and inside for winter. The monster brugs are just to big for me.

The color in the picture is lighter than the actual flower. The second picture was taken without the flash.

Oh that is really nice in shape and color. I've killed so many cuttings and young plants. I was told it is more advantageous to grow these types from seed. You did a great job growing this.. A good size to take in and out like you mentioned makes it attractive to me.. Just beautiful.

Hi everyone
I'm back :-)
I decided to rejoin Dave's after a few members from here contacted me via e-mail for info. about Sphaerocarpiums (Cold Group Brugs)
It's good to see some 'old faces' and great to see there is still an interest in Sphaeros.
See you all around.

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi Alan.....Welcome back !!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Please don't let my and Alday's question to get lost in this thread. If seeds aren't available in the USA, please say so - if they are, please let us know where. Thanks!

Mesilla Park, NM

I think rapsody mentioned several posts above that she gets hers at BGI, which is US based.

I ordered mine from Alan , if it's a PayPal issue, maybe you can send a check or money order. He does mail direct to the U.S.. Those are just my thoughts. Maybe you need to specify what your issue is.

I have only purchased my seeds from Alan. I never had a reason to look elsewhere for seed.
So alday and KayJones I'm sorry but I don't have an answer to your question.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I will try to find out how to get seeds from Alan - dmail headed your way! Thanks for your information, my friends!!!

Long Beach, CA

You can find the warm seeds on Ebay and BGI. The cold ones you may have to get from Alan.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Warm? Cold? Will you explain what you mean, please? Thank you.

There are two groups of Brugmansia ...the warm group (tropical)
and what we call the coldies group ...they prefer cooler conditions.

It remains to mention that wild species and naturally occuring hybrids have been additionally divided into two subgroups (sometimes wrongly called sections). This grouping gives the plant enthusiast and grower special notes for growing them. The groups are called Brugmansia (warm group) and Sphaerocarpium (cold group). Sphaerocarpium is referring to the special form of the bulbous fruits.

In the last one all species and hybrids are found that are ranked under insiders belonging to the so called cold group. These are Brugmansia arborea, Brugmansia sanguinea, Brugmansia vulcanicola and Brugmansia x flava (maybe in the future x rubella). They all prefer cool locations in the garden (best under 18°C - around 10°C at nights) to set blooms and they need higher air humidity - these are the reasons why they are thought to be tricky and problematic in cultivation - but they aren't. Except for B. arborea and some Flavas all other species and hybrids lack in fragrance.

I'm glad this discussion is taking place, lots of interesting facts ..

Kay, I hope you can get some. I'm hoping I'm cold enough here in my area to grow these. I'm really excited to try these particular seeds. I gave had horrible luck with cuttings and plants that I have purchased for the sanguinas. So I'm thinking I gave to start with seeds.

Hope you get some really special seedlings :-)

This is a picture from this morning. A very pale color, but a very nice scent. It is Arborea S x Hurstwood Hannah.

So I used some pollen from Hurstwood Bryony x Amethyst that had been frozen. Maybe there will be a seed pod.

Also have some buds on Rosa Lila x Hurstwood Bow. But these are only an inch long so it will be awhile.

I'm already spraying for spider mites.

I love that! I've been misting daily with just a water bottle and haven't seen any spider mites yet. Mim thinking that the humidity with the spray bottle us helping. I also had planned to get a regular humidifier fir colds and use ghost an hour a day in that area.

Your flowers are beautiful and I ca hardly wait till the others open.. We are still in the end of the remodel and I hope to start my seeds next week once they leave the Inside of the house..
