There is a wild crabapple near my house that flowers early spring. I guess the weather has been mild yet some cool days, the tree just finished dropping fruit and there are new flowers growing, not many but still very odd, what causes this?
Crabapple flowered twice in one year!
Many trees get a late summer flush, or second burst of growth. Most times it just results in new leaves, but i have some Crabapple trees here, 2 out of six had a few blossoms this year. You will also notive new leaves, most likely,

I grew up in San Diego, CA and I had this problem with apple trees. They would get all mixed up and flower at odd times.
It is not unusual however for some varieties of crab apples to do this even in northern areas. It sometimes can happen after a warm spell followed by a cool spell and back to warm again.
That is what happened, we had temps in the 40s at end of summer, abnormally cold. Next week we had normal temps in low 70s then next week in the 80s which is too hot for this time of year, so I see how they got confused.
I wonder if the odd weather means something?
in my opinion we have always had odd weather. In my 30 plus years of gardening I have never seen a "normal" year.
