CLOSED: Brown insect at work

Saw this insect outside work last night. Never seen one of these before. Thought it looked kinda interesting. It's just brown with kind of a hard shell on its back then a little spike looking thing coming out the back

Giant water bug in the family Belostomatidae - can give a very painful stab with its beak. The 'spike' protruding from its hind end is its breathing tube that allows it to hang just below the water surface waiting for prey. They are very strong fliers, and may be found far from any water source.
