Clematis Piilu question

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

Hi, I just bought a small starter in a 4 in. pot and very exited about this interesting variety. I wonder would it be better to plant it now and hope it'll survive the Ohio winter (with mulch and any protection possible)? or to keep it potted until spring? I'd really like to make sure it stays happy and ready to grow next season.

Thanks, Maria

I'd opt to plant it now, with all amendments, and then a lot of mulch. The roots will adapt in the next few weeks.

Others have differing opinions including planting the clematis in the pot, now, then replanting in spring. To me it's double work.

Thanks. We got a few days around 80F so I couldn't resist to plant it today. The roots were on a small side but maybe it's normal for a young clematis. Hope it will have some chances to get established before freezing. Or I could pot it back if absolutely necessary I guess.

I'm glad you planted it. The clematis is better off in the good earth than in a pot. The roots can't be huge in a 4" pot so they're probably a normal size for that pot - don't worry! I am sure it will acclimatize before a freeze, not to be confused with any frosts.

Delete the thought of putting it back in the pot. Just mulch it well and it will form good roots.

Appreciate your support, it was much needed. I wanted Piilu so bad and now just such a chicken about. It supposed to be quite hardy though and that's kinda encouraging too. Happy growing!

The mulch will keep the earth warmer than it would be without the mulch, so the roots continue to expand. In spring you can feed it and watch it grow.

Maria--

I have had an Estonian Clematis "Piilu" for about 3 years now.
Bought it from "Brushwood Nursery"--they are GREAT Folks to deal with!
Pruning--it is a Type #2.
It is lovely--with profuse, small, lavender blooms. Will post pictures.
For one--this Clematis-like all the other Estonian Clematis are hardy to Z 5.

Also--it can be grown in lg. containers (that's what mine is in) and it can take some shade.

I cannot advise you when to plant it--but you can contact Brushwood and ask them.
You will LOVE this "Little Duckling"--that is what "Piilu" means in Estonian.
