How to grow Brugmansia???

What is the best way to grow brugmansia? I have a 'Charles Grimaldi', of which I put in the ground. So far it just has a few leaves on it and the leaves are not that lush either.

I am thinking of digging it up and bring it in before the snow comes, as I lost one before by leaving in the ground.

I would appreciate any tips to get this poor thing off to a better start.
