I'm chipping up some very small cedar and oak branches, as well as oak leaves. The cedar branches have the little green berries (?) on them. Is this ok to use in compost or mulch? I run everything through the shredder twice, but I realize that all might not be chopped up.
Chipping cedar branches
I believe there are seeds inside those berries. There is a slight possibility a seedling might sprout. I you patrol your garden often, then it would just be a matter of pulling the seedling whenever. I would use the chipped material in the compost pile or directly as mulch.
I agree with Vossner, I don't see a problem with it. Good to see you on the Texas forum Vossner.
Thank you Vossner and Frostweed. Today was my first time to use my "new" chippper/shredder, and I had soooo much fun. It was a Xmas gift, but with my foot surgery and so much rehab, etc. I was really behind and I thought I shouldn't start something new. DH took a pic of me after I had played with it for 4-5 hours (part branches and part dry leaves I already had bagged up). I was one NASTY woman. DH asked why I would do that when I could buy mulch, and it was so cheap. I already knew why, but it got me thinking about it again. It's because there's just something I really like about making something useful out of throwaway stuff.
That pic is really funny with the dirt being so thick on my face around my glasses, just like a race car driver. I'd post it, but I don't know you that well. hahaha
Oh come on, we all have been dirty at some point, as a matter of fact i think it is a badge of honor.
I often wonder about those that will go to almost any length to keep from getting dirty. I like to think we do it just because it's fun and possibly connects back to our inner child and "playtime".
A similar corollary to that is my camera stuff. I'm often asked why I have so much invested in gear and am willing to lay down in the dirt/mud/bushes to get a shot when any current cell phone will take decent pictures and is much easier to carry. I've pretty much got it down to "just because I like to hear the shutter click and it's makes me happy". Even if you could explain WHY you enjoy doing something, dirty or not, the average listener wouldn't truly understand...
On the other hand, I'm jealous of your chipper/shredder. Have so wanted one of those for many years even though in real life, I have absolutely zero use for one of those machines.
Have fun with it and keep all your fingers where you can see them!
Steve

I totally understand about your "camera love," Steve.
