Call me lazy....

But have the rules changed as far as us being able to offer plants for sale any where but the classifieds or marketplace? I am too lazy to read the rules again after all these years :) ie Call me lazy....

Rules can change but want to make sure as I told someone we can't so they don't get in trouble.

I believe that's the rule now. But I could be wrong.

Sounds like it is still the rule not to sell unless you take out an ad to do so.

Yes, it is strictly about selling advertising space. It is unfortunate that DG doesn't have a "for sale" or a "co-op" thread, such as All Things Plants, so that small businesses or individuals have a sight to sell plants or plant-related material. This regulation seems to be closely watched and woe be the one who breaks this rule.

Perhaps the ones who control this site will come up with a way to help remedy this problem.

I agree. I had (and still have) to go elsewhere for co-ops. I participate in those fairly frequently, especially for plants that are less common. There is nothing like a lively plant co-op and they can generate a lot of activity. It does take much longer than two weeks for co-ops - so the Classifieds definitely don't work.

I agree but DG has been like this for the 11 years I have been here and Dave set it up that way. He wanted us to trade rather than sell our stuff and I like it as far as I think most would sell rather than work out a trade. I recently participated in a for postage and they ask for extra. But not until it was agreed I would get them for postage after I suggested a trade. I felt very uncomfortable about is but sent 2 dollars extra. I guess I could have backed out but never thought of it. I do send extra if I can. Next time I will work out details before I seal the deal.

As for co-ops they went sour a long time ago and the new owners know how bad it went and chose not to do them also. (my guess). There were a few who had them collected the money and run....I really hated to see them go but how do you control the losses members took?

I think Dave set up allthingsplants from the beginning to buy at your own risk and I am not sure if those having the co-ops can make money there or not.
In a perfect world co-ops would be awesome but always someone who has to cheat :(

I'm sure I'm not the only one who likes to have both options -- to trade and to sell some extras. And the old Marketplace was a great idea and fun place to browse. Too bad it's in the past now. As far as postage is concerned I believe that digging, cleaning, packing material and sometimes a special trip to the PO is worth a little appreciation. Not to mention if rarer plants are involved. It depends on everyone's own situation of course and discussing the details is a good idea. I always considered an offer for postage as a big favor though and tried to be grateful.

I agree. Cheating takes place in plant swaps as well as in co-ops. Seems it would be fairly easy to add back some co-ops along with all the new updates and changes that are going on. Dave doesn't have anything to do with it now so onward and upward, IMHO. Trust but verify. :)

There can be problems in Co-ops, (see the problems with Chef Mike on ATP), but where problems occur, it is not all that difficult to set up a rating system for those who sell on Co-ops or other threads. All it takes is having a simple "check" system, either checking "satisfied" or "unsatisfied", when purchasing something via a Co-op. It would be nice to not only have a box to check but also have a way to explain one's rating. Sellers who are honest would not "fear" being rated. Those who are out to cheat, perhaps would.

The way it is now, one cannot even list a website in their signature box without getting into trouble.

The rating system is a good idea. There are ways of verifying. It's do-able.
