I planted an althea several years ago so I wouldn't have to look at the two story behind me. Not an ugly house nor bad neighbors but I just don't want to look at either any more than necessary. Since that time, my baby oak tree has become an adult and has cast enough shade on the althea that it's (the althea) become badly misshapen and has a pronounced lean to the left trying to get more sun.
I'm considering lopping off about the top third of the plant at the branch junctions once dormant in a few months to see if I can get it back to somewhat vertical.
Personally, I think altheas are quite pretty but about as trashy with their continually dropping blossoms as any plant I've ever grown. And... if the pruning does kill it, I really won't be much worse off than I am now but if it dies then I'll have to find something else to take it's place for screening purposes.
Anyone ever try this and if so, what were your results?
Thanks for any advice you may have.
Steve
Althea needs haircut
They can handle a good pruning. I think I will take hedgers to all of mine soon to get them back to a respectable level and hopefully encourage more bushiness.
Yes, they can take a severe pruning with no problem.
Thanks all..
