Mexican Milkweed Seeds

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Do they require cold stratification to germinate? I saved some from one of my plants and would like to plant them.

I dropped some seeds down last winter and I had 3 new plants come up this summer. Don't know if it was from the seeds I dropped or if the original plant did it, but I was sure happy to see them.

That makes me think they need some cold. Off to research!

I just winged it which is pretty much how I live life. The seed pods were there and starting to break open, so I just put a few under 1/4" of dirt before they all blew away.

Here is a link to an article that says they do require stratification and gives a lot of other info too.

In that same article for stratification it stated:

"Seeds from the tropical milkweed, Asclepias curassavica (and other tropical milkweed species) do not require this treatment"

Stephanie, my Mexican milkweed usually volunteers for me in the least expected places, and also cuttings are extremely easy to root, so I don't bother with planting the seed.

I never bothered to do anything at all to the seeds and have it everywhere now. It reseeds readily and the Monarchs love it.
