Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Have a friend in Houston
Has an orange tree that swallows part sun at ground level
Wants to plant under that tree
Do you have a suggestion for plants that might survive the challenging conditions?

Maybe you can show us a picture of the tree, so we can better tell the situation.

My neighbors orange tree survived and so did a lemon tree up the road along with a kumquat. The orange tree is in bloom as we speak :)

Yummmm, both sweet aromas. Still the citrus is really a thick tree for shade, and you would need to protect from tbe oils in the fruits i would think. My dad topped his tree so that the tallest branches can be reached with a 6' ladder when the citrus ripen.

My neighbor rents and he didn't eat one orange and I never got a chance to get any as I was too busy. He didn't eat them because he was afraid too :( I told him no reason to be afraid as they would be great when they are ready to eat.

We use the peels for our beds around our trees to keep cats away and also the best cleaner I have found is to slice the peels really thin about 1/8th to 1/4th inch place them in a container with a lid (I used a vinegar bottle this time) and cover them with white vinegar and place in the hot sun for around a week or more. Strain out the peels and we put that in a spray bottle and use it. As time goes by it turns dark but doesn't work any less. It has taken off the worst water marks on vases when soaked and let sit. Doesn't smell bad either. I also refilled the bottle with vinegar to see if I can get a second batch from the same peels.

I slice them like that as I feel the more orange oil will come out it they are really thin. (more surface to release the oil.

I wouldnt know when to pick since I know they arent ripe when you think they are, but my dad juices his and has em for b'fast as they keep really well in the fridge after juicing. I wish you luck if you DO find something will grow under there...
