A few years back a friend sent me a gift of seeds marked old yella hibiscus. Planted indoors this past winter in peat pods then moved to the garden the midde of summer. Today I got my first flower from her. Sadly I think this variety will not weather our winters here but it was nice to get a bloom first season all the same.
Abelmoschus manihot
You may be surprised...it is a lot hardier hibiscus than most people give it credit...I grew it in a large tub when I lived in Colorado Springs...the tub sometimes was pulled into the garage when I remembered, but most often not...Love this cheerful plant!...it is actually a manihot (Abelmoschus manihot) and the peoples of many countries not only cook the pods like okra, but also harvest the plant for the tubers...but I grow it for the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds!...
FYI 'Old Yella' Hibiscus is a very different plant...and is in the common category of Hardy Hibiscus...it isn't actually Yellow, not edible, and very susceptible to grasshoppers in our part of the country...
Awesome, txaggiega, thanks so much! This is just the response I had hoped for! The original post had a question mark after the title but I was having problems posting. I was looking at it this morning and the stalk is quite thick and strong. Here is to hoping!
If it doesn't work out, Beach...give me a dmail in spring...I will have plenty of cuttings! LOL
That is so sweet of you to offer! I am really touched! Thank you. :)
