Euphorbia lathyris

South Beach, OR(Zone 9a)

AKA mole plant, etc. These have started popping up in my yard after the blackberry removal. Looking at the reviews in the plant files, it is either much loved or much hated. A couple of the "hated" reviews are from the PNW. Wondering if any of you have experience with this plant? It's rather pretty and I'm thinking of moving the volunteers to fill in among other plantings. I know that the sap is poisonous to the skin.

Hi Lynnala, I don't have experience with this plant directly, but I went and read the reviews of it to see what you were talking about. My conclusion is if it were in my yard I would get rid of it, simply because I have children here sometimes, and if someone picked one there could be decidedly miserable results.

It is absolutely amazing what has been hidden under your blackberries, some pleasant surprises along with the mole plant, so you could cut your losses on this one.

Hi mauryhill! I was thinking the same thing about my cats, no kids to worry about. I think I'm going put it out front among other stuff where my cats can't get at it and it's away from any human interaction except mine. I just hate to get rid of something that my new yard is offering up! Especially when they've waited all these years under the blackberries. I admire their persistence.

That looks like one I had. It spreads rapidly by roots. I like to look of it also but although it is light and airy the roots are a devil to pull.

Hi Willowwind; yeah, it's popping up all over the place. Better it than the blackberries though; you should see some of the roots my husband is pulling up! He wants to hang them on our fence as the heads of honored vanquished enemies.
