American Coots

Pueblo, CO(Zone 5b)

1 Note leaf-shaped webbed toes, instead of webbed feet
2 Sitting on nest on matted reeds and cattails
3 Chicks (Cootlings?) which are too cute
4 & 5 - I didn't know what these were at first, since the adults were black and the chicks were black. They go through a gray immature phase.

pollengarden, those are great pictures and info. that you've shared. Thank you. I don't get to see these birds here during the heat of summer. But, they migrate and homestead here over the winter. I am looking forward to having them back in our area. Those 'cootlings' are so so cute. And the juveniles are fun to look at too.
