sealing cut stem of Elephant Ears

Blytheville, AR

The last Elephant Ear I cast has 2 holes in it where the leaf bled, one at the cut stem and the other along the midrib. How can I prevent the leaf from bleeding while I cast it? I have read that the sugars in the sap prevent the concrete from setting up. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I'm very new at this. Thanks!
