several years ago someone posted a great recipe for a potting soil mixture containing peat moss or coir and rice hulls. anyone remember this?

No, but on the container gardening forum Al Tapla posted a real good recipe, actually 3 recipes I think, for potting soil. You should take a look at it. He is really good.

peat and coir are both very moisture retentive. I beleive in tapla.
