I have this little strip under my kitchen window. I've tried several different plants here, but they get too long or too big and block the walkway to the sunroom. The ruellia do well because they are compact. I'm looking for some other suggestions what to put here. This is on the south side of our house, gets morning shade until about 10 or 11AM, then lots of sun until late afternoon. I'd like to move the rosemary as it really doesn't get enough light, but don't have anywhere to move it just yet. I'd prefer natives that don't get too tall as they start reaching for the sun and flopping onto the walkway.
What to Do Here?
You could try Ruellia nudiflora, Rudbeckia fulgida, and coneflowers.
Stephanie, the Ruellia's seem perfect for the situation. I think I would just fill it with Ruellias and if you want more variety, just plant several colors of Ruellia. Another solution for a place like that is a shortish vine on a trellis, one that goes up to the window level, not beyond. You could even do both if you like. Dont know if you can grow Clematis there but they are a relatively short vine and wow what flowers! There is also a native climbing snapdragon with a cute little blue flower. Josephine can tell you the name. The word escapes me just now. Common name is "Roving Sailor"
Yes that vine is very cute. and I can save you one if you like. You will need a small trellis for it.
How tall does the vine get? I could find a trellis!
We have one at the Fielder house garden on a 5 foot free standing trellis, it can go taller, but that will work, it is not a heavy vine and it dies to the ground in winter.
