What to expect with my KONJAC???

Virginia Beach, VA

I bought a konjac on ebay and it must be around 8 inches tall now. I also have another one that I bought n3 years ago not realizing it is also a konjac. I had purchase several alocasia/colocasia this year and low and behold i see a baby konjac!! Do I need to be excited??

I do not know much about the plant. Will it flower eventually?

hey belle!!! :)
welcome to the wonderful, addictive world of amorphophallus..:)
its past time for konjac to bloom.. if mature size..usually around 5"+ is in
spring..
amorphs are heavy feeders..so give them good fertilizer 20;20:20 is good..
i fertilize mine every other watering.. they will put on nice corm growth..down in
virginia beach where youre at..you may not need to unpot them till ..maybe nov..
i do mine beginning of oct.. rinse them off ..let them dry.. rub the remaining roots off..
and overwinter store..in coolish room.. i keep mine in the basement in a cupboard..
stays around high 50sF.. then come aprilish.. they will come alive again..
YEA !!!
WARNING..WARNING !!! DANGER DANGER !!!
they are addictive to us collectors.. :) heheheee
keep us posted on how they are doing ...

Do they flower?

oh ya.. and the larger/older the corm the larger the flower..
i know many say konjac smells..and there is a smell..
i had 6 flower this yr (april) and you can tell theres a "smell" but
its not horrible.. mmmm...??? maybe i stink??? LOL :)
just keep them well watered,fertilized.. konjac are easy to store..
and if yours are around 5" or so..id say you will have a wonderful
deep maroon/blood coloured flower next april..ish... :)

i missed the tv..but had couple friends locally..that know i grow amorphs.. call
me ..and ask.. "is that the plant youre growing?" :)
the national botanical gardens has a titanum flowering..
if u get a flower like that one belle.. u better back off the fertilizing...
:) ehehehee... better yet.. sell it..that would be one rare konjac !!!!
:)
i have 2 "larger" titanum corms.. they are at least 2,maybe 3 yrs away from
size large enough to flower.. that is if i dont kill them 1st.. :( sigh..
i'll have to go online and see what was shown..

Congrats! Yeah it'll flower once the corm is about softball size. THEY STINK but the flower is worth it and the smell only lasts for about 2-3 days.

They sure are slow growing because I have one that is 3 years old. I have to take a picture of it.

Yes, bright, indirect light for the Dens. I have one big Konjac corm that refuses to wake up! LOL! Guess it's takeing the year off!

My kojnac leaves are yellowing!!

We had a lot of rain here the l;ast few days and I noticed the konjac that I bought on line is yellowing and the main stem is soft so I pulled it. The main bulb is kind of shrivelled (--Sp) but there is a corm that appears healthy with 2 baby corm . I am surprised that the bay corm are elongated the size of my thumb.

Now what should I do? Cut off the stem? Dry it for few days?
I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Do they ever branch out?

They are not very pricey but I hate to lose it.

Let the soft stem stay until it pulls off easily. It may be too late to get any new growth from the corm. Post a photo of the main corm.

The babies can be cleaned off and kept in a cool dry place until next year.

Your soil may be too heavy and retained too much water. I use a lot of perlite in my potting mix for these. GOOD DRAINAGE is essentual IMHO.

I went ahead and cut off the soft part and replanted them because we still have a lot of warm weather. this is my first knojac and wants to see if it sprouts again.

Thank you for your input.

Belle
