I have a corner that is part shade. Soil is enriched (maybe too much for some natives) and it gets regular water. I have S. greggi there that I just cut back to the ground. It has always been spindly and had few blooms. I would like to replace it this fall/winter with something better. Wanting something upright, that does not spread and is not huge (like turks cap) Any ideas?
What I have on hand: skeleton leaf golden eye, sterile pink loosestrife, rock rose
Would monarda tolerate some shade?

Plant recommendations...
I think it would, I have some in part shade and it has done well. Coneflowers and Columbine do well too.
Also Rudbeckia fulgida.
I want something ling blooming.
Can fulgida take heat and drought and hiw ling dies it bloom?
I planted Golstrum many years ago in my dryest bed and its bloom time was too short for me. Does the native plant bloom longer? Also, every site lists it as needing full sun. I will try some but wonder how it will do in a more shady area?

How about Summer/Garden Phlox (Phlox paniculata)? It likes dappled light / part shade, blooms for months and -- naturally, if I'm recommending it -- is a big favorite among butterflies.

Mildew?
I have Fulgida blooming now in my front and back yard and it is doing very well.
My Phlox hasn't done as well in the front yard, no mildew but not very vigorous.
Is it doing ok in semi shade? I never thought about getting any till now.
How tall does it get in part shade, I was hoping for something at least 24 inches.
Right now my tallest one is 21 inches.
Thats a bit short for my needs. I did find some to order though.
Stuff I have growing in part shade are turks cap (blooms nearly constantly), pigeon berry, dwarf pomagranite, coral berry, columbine, pentas, jewel of opar, phlox, virginia sweetspire.
Good luck.....Lynne
Which phlox?
Looks like Phlox pilosa but might be another. Check out a picture online for a concrete ID.
That looks like the Phlox Pilosa to me also. http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=PHPI
@ Cheryl....The 'John Fanick' Phlox doesn't spread and is and upright 2 1/2 foot for me. It is a very long bloomer and will take partial shade. I got my start from Anna several years ago. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57939/
I am going to order some for the fall if I can find it online. I like the two tone color and if it can grow in shadier conditions all the better. When does it bloom here? For how long?
Seems it has been blooming for about six weeks now, and I have a picture taken in late Sept 2010 where it was still blooming.
