Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Just back from a lovely moonlit ride through the fields with Stan. We lost the calf, but saved the cow. I was thinking about Paul's post and how farm folk know how to live - "My husband and I regularly go for romantic moonlit drives through the fields." Getting back to basics - life, death, and some agony on the side. LOL, but we wouldn't trade it for anything.

We had a pretty weekend. I got lots of stuff done on Saturday in the gardens and Stan got the new window in the peak of the attic finished. Yesterday, we skipped church, took long naps and then took DD and her family out to dinner. There's a great Italian restaurant not too far from us. We don't go in the summer, too many tourists, but the rest of the year, we enjoy it. the kids love the tortelini. We also got to talk to our younger DD's new man on the phone. They are coming up for Thanksgiving and we are all looking forward to meeting him. He sure has made a positive difference in her life.

K-Jo, about horns, Stan does dehorning as a side job in the winter and if it's done right, you can't tell that the animal ever had horns. I don't know much about milking shorthorns, there have been a few in the area, but they are mostly a dual duty animal - meat and milk, but not enough of the milk to make them terribly productive. Stan's brother had a couple that were 4-H projects his kids left him, but they didn't stay in the herd long. Don't get me started on cows that kick!!!!!!!!

Off to make a cup of tea.
take care,
kathleen
