CLOSED: Beetles Found in Ohio on Pine Tree

Athens, OH

Attached is a photo showing the tree surface under the bark, the inner surface of the bark, and the two insects that were found. Each of these is about 4mm in length.

I received this response from OSU Entomology.

"The lighter brown insect is a bark beetle, the pine engraver. It attacks severely stressed pine trees and creates the galleries under the bark. The darker insect is a weevil that attacks freshly killed trees. Once they are colonized, there is nothing that can be done and the tree will die. Non-pines are not at risk from these insects. Only stressed pine trees are at risk. If other pines on the property are stressed from planting too close, drought, flooding, etc, they could be at risk."
