Don't give up on passie seeds too soon. Last spring (2012) I had planted several small pots of passie seeds. In the fall I didn't have enough room in my greenhouse for everything so, I had a hanging basket type container in the cornor and I dumped all those little containers into it thinking something might grow although I doubted it. This spring that container had 4 small passie plants growing. Since I didn't save the tags I'll have to wait til they bloom to see what I got. I also had a small container that I put some canna seeds in and there were cannas and a bunch of some kind of passies growing. I was just out admiring some of my potted tropicals, cause I've been busy this week and haven't had time to say hi to them and right there in my Wonga Wonga pot was a small passie. I planted that Wonga Wonga spring of 2012 and the little plant just started growing recently. So actually 2 lessons learned, don't give up and be careful reusing soil! ;>)
I learned something this year
Many of the die hard passy growers have areas set aside for those forever to sprout seeds. I loose faith after 2 months and tend to forget what I've planted too. They say some can take a year or longer to sprout. I've had seeds pop up in 7 days, thats more my speed, LOL. I've gotten multiple plants from sellers before too ;-)
I usually give up after a couple weeks, but last year instead of just dumping them I just piled them out of my way and then in the fall dumped all the containers. Maybe I won't do that anymore. Although, I have WAAAAY too many passies now, so unless it's something super spectacular, I think I'm done buying.
How does everyone trellis their plants to take up less room? Last year I thought I had a great Idea. I took wire fencing with about 2 inch square holes, cut it to fit the circumference of my pots and attached the ends together. Made like a tube, thinking that they would climb and go around an fill the fencing. Nope, they went straight up and hung over. Now I'm think of getting those wire stands that they use for the plastic corrigated yard signs and just keep wrapping the vines around.
what do you think??
Roxxanne I've been struggling with the best way to grow these too as I have a ton of small plants now. I have a few trees and a wooden fence that I plant to put "certain" plants on but after that I'm probably going to build some different structures. What I did was got on google images and typed in trellis. You'll be surprise how creative people get. One pretty cool set up was a teepee made out of pieces of branches.
Anybody else have photos of their trellis?
I am very glad I read this. Darren if you recall me asking you about the Maypops. Well the 3 I have growing that I started from seed, are at least 15 feet long now. I ran wires along my wooden fence and now they are going up the pine trees. I guess if they ever bloom I won't be able to see the blooms. Was wondering do they ever branch out or do I need to trim them to get them to branch out. I did buy a few others and they seem to be branching out but are only about 3 feet long. Any advise on the Maypop?
Wonderful I hope mine will someday look so nice.
I'm sure it will. Mine dies to the ground every fall, in your climate it will probably grow most of the year.
Thanks, I hope so.
I got real creative with a blue crown passi. I have a neighbor who likes to watch us when we are outside and we have a small porch with lattice work that only reached about half way up. I took some jute twine and strung it from the top of the lattice work to the roof and within a couple of months, we had a living wall. Now my nosy neighbor can't see in. It hasn't bloomed yet and needs to be trimmed, but I will post a pic so you can see.
Good idea! Love living walls to keep spying eyes blocked! ;-)
It doesn't bother me as much as it does my teenager. LOL.
Txtea, some plants grown from seed will not produce flowers the first year, some plants like p.caerulea may never produce blooms. Not sure why this happens but know from what other passiflora growers say. I know plants grown from cuttings can bloom when only a foot tall.
As far as cutting on them, they will and can branch out more nodes after snipping on them. You can also let them droop/drop down unsupported and often where it bends they will put out new growth nodes. I don't grow incarnata but have p.incense which grows similarly.
Roxxanne, do you pollinate your maypop? That is a gorgeous healthy plant.
Darren
It is pollinated by the bees. It is not as big this year as it was last. Our weather hasn't been that great this year, lots of rain and only a few really hot days.
