the leaves on our squash vines suddenly wilted. there were a few squash bug eggs and one squash bug one one plant. I pulled the plants and split all the stems and root and could not find any bugs or worms. I even used a magnifier. the roots were small and the part of the stem that was in the ground was a little yellow. I have been watering them a lot in the hot weather. any ideas what is causing this?
squash vines wilting
There are two different pests attacking your vines.
1 squash vine borer. The larvae is small and may be hatching inside your vines
2 squash bugs. These beetle like bugs suck the juice from leaves
Since you could not fine any borers it may be a virus or something like that
Best advice is rotate and do not grow squash there for at least 2 years. Also compost like crazy, even composting right in veggie beds. Try using coffee grounds free from starbucks, egg shells, comfrey leaves and in the fall oak leaves. This boosts good bacteria and helps the overall health of the soil.
