What is your best method of water conservation? This year I am using more mulch than ever before and keeping all of the weeds pulled or chopped down ,the crab grass is a real water hog...
Water Conservation
Mulch seems to work best for me. Lots of native plants too. Rain barrels help some.
I plant mostly native and heirloom plants. I also use several layers of newspaper with mulch on top. Watering is done with soaker hoses. These methods have really helped with water usage and maintenance.
As ;you can see in the attached photo, cats make very good mulch. The cat's name is Moon Pie and he will sit in any pot where there is room.
Oh my Goodness Marty, that is just too cute!!!
Aw... that is so sweet! I need that type of mulch!
My cat just does something very disgusting in my mulch Nia I too use newspaper under the mulch and sometimes I use cardboard just as a stand alone mulch if it is hidden like in the Okra patch because if we happen to get a lot of rain the mud in the okra patch is pretty bad and it has to be picked daily..
Moon Pie is a cutie!
Yes, my cat used to leave "presents" in the mulch also. I found that citrus peel discouraged him but we could only eat so many oranges lol. Unfortunately, he wandered into the wrong yard this spring and was shot. We sure do miss him.
I'm afraid to use newspaper and mulch with the 3000 lbs of compost and its attendant hordes of roly-polies. so I just mix the compost in with greensand and bone meal and potash when I can get it, stir, water, and let the top surface crust off. I am not using as much water this year as I was last year with plain old black gumbo and my plants are huge. Still need to empty camera, I will have a month's worth of progression pics by the time I get around to it.
