Compost and manure. The planting process is so important and gets the plant off to a great start - bone meal, compost, manure, good soil and a drink of lukewarm Epsom Salt (1 TBSP to a gallon) about once a month will produce good roots and a strong plant as long as you've planted it deeply enough. Mulch is essential - do not skimp on it.
