This is a 2 part question. lol What is your favorite mint? I always thought you couldn't get the true mint from seeds and need to keep the blooms pinched off. The seeds will grow just fine but don't have the fragrance of the mother plant. What are you thoughts on this? I try to keep the blooms on my mints pinched off but I know I miss some and I have some that come back the next year with no scent. Ok my favorite mint is chocolate because I love it in coffee. Whats yours?
Mints
i just got a chocolate mint that wins. i put it in our salad the other night mmmmmm was good.
farmgirl I have never tried it in salad I will have to try that. Thanks for telling me.
My favorite is pineapple. I love it in my iced tea. Pam
I think the deal with mints is .... your apple, chocolate, orange ... or wichever cultivars are hybrids that won't produce true from seeds. They also cross with each other and you might end up with anything. There are different mentha species (like mentha piperita - peppermint) - and I'd assume that they'd be Ok from seeds. However, if you were to grow them near a hybrid variety they could cross pollinate. They hybrids have been selected for their fragrance and flavor. You'd probably never match that from seed grown plants - but ya never know. There's always a chance you could end up with a better hybrid.
Thanks PS thats what I thought but just wanted to hear it from somebody else and you didn't tell you favorite mint.Lol
Catlady I like pineapple and ginger mint too. Heck I like all the ones that smell good and taste good.....
Mystic, I've never had ginger mint, sure sounds good. I'll have to put that on my wish list. I've been without pineapple for a couple of years, the nursery where I got all my mint went out of business. Bummer! However I found one and made a trade for it. Yea! Pam

Orange mint is mine, as i love orange mint tea in the mornng.
Mystic, You will be hearing from me in the spring. Thanks! Pam
I'm with you nancy, I too love the chocolate mint. I like to "smell and tell" those who have never heard of it.(usually non-gardners)
I like spearmint. It's nice when you put a few sprigs in the pan when heating up peas. Yummier yet with fresh peas!
i have chocolate mint, ginger mint, pineapple mint, orange mint, water mint, eau de cologne mint and black peppermint. let me know if you want any cuttings! they survive well in the mail.
lil
if i have to pick one i guess its the ginger mint
I think I'm the only person in the world who can't grow mint. Everyone else says it's invasive. The ones I've gotten in trades and for SASE all died! What am I doing wrong? I potted them as I didn't want them to spread. Is this what I'm doing wrong? The only one that did anything that you would consider calling *growing* was the chocolate mint, but it died too. But, I think I ate too much of it. LOL!
if you can get some root cuttings now, you can plant them up in a pot and they'll be ready this year. try sinking the whole pot in the soil if you think your soil is the problem. keep it well watered until it gets established.

Joan
hmmm...seems to me someone once asked me if I wanted some chocolate mint...can't for the LIFE of me remember who that was....
I REALLY NEVER MET A MINT I DIDN'T LIKE :) BUT I TOO, HAVE TROUBLE GETTING THEM TO COME BACK.THE ONLY ONE THAT DID... TOOK OVER. IT WAS GRAPEFRUIT.(CITRUS)EVERY YEAR I CAN'T RESIST AND BUY MORE.I EVEN BRING THEM IN, BUT THEY DWINDLE AWAY BEFORE SPRING PLANTING.
Joan, I can sympathize. For years, I simply couldn't grow mint. I tried it in every spot in the garden, moved to a different side of town, still killed them on a regular basis. Finally, something changed, the mint gods smiled down on my garden, or the mint fairies visited, whatever. I bought spearmint and peppermint, knowing they would die, and then they didn't. They merged, so I don't know which is which now. I think I hit just the right combination of neglect and doting. But I have traded for chocolate and orange twice, and lost them both times. Very few nurseries here carry them. I will say, I am growing them everywhere but the south side of the house, and doing nothing but allowing them to be there. So I plan to eventually find more chocolate and orange, and will do so until it survives. Now, if it will make you feel any better, I can't grow dragon's blood sedum, and my daughter with the brownest thumb in Texas has a pot I gave her bursting out all over, with absolutely no attention from her.
Thanks Aimee, I feel better knowing I'm not the only one who's having trouble with mint. I might try again this spring.
