i just know tropic is going to give me grief..:)
but...
seems a fair amount of titanum growers out there..
i have 4 hewittii corms..from seedlings 6 months old..to
going on its 2nd yr growing season..
ive chatted with couple growers in germany..and USA..
they enjoy sprouting seeds..then selling seedlings..
heard that they are not as easy as titanum..???
i have very limited experience with hewittii.. going on my
2nd growing season now.. so.."newbie"
anyone have any experience with hewittii??
how do they compare to growth of titanum..do the corms double +
in growing season ..if grown well???
im growing mine similar to titanum.. same potting mix..same fertilizing,
same sun exposure, same potting mix moisture..
hope some others chime in here !!!! :)
any growers of amorph hewittii out there?
I've never seen hewettii offered here. It would be good to get some shipped in but our quarantine people are absolutely ruthless on plants. Seeds are usually a bit easier to get in, but then not all seeds are on the list of permitted imports. One good example is an Australian native plant that I could only get seeds from overseas. I checked on the AQIS (quarantine) data base but it wasn't listed. To import it I'd have to submit a case for having it listed. That meant I'd have to research everything about the plant, invasiveness, etc., etc. Then pay a big fee for them to carry out their own assessment. If it was okayed it'd go on the data base and could be imported. And that was all for seeds of a plant that was a native. Hewettii might already be on the data base, but it would only be seeds.
wow..that would be some hoops to jump thru tropic..
have u tried your dr friends in cairns ..the nurseryman???
maybe he grows them..???
there use to be a retired professor in the midwest who was starting
hewittii seeds..and would sell some on ebay.. i got 6 from him..
4 are going strong still.. on 2nd yr now..
and a guy in germany..
i see a nice sized hewittii corm came up on ebay last week from
tindara.. i didnt know louis was growing other amorphs than titanum
but im glad. if anyone can get some good plants going..it would be him...
i only have small hewittii.. so..i dont have any experience beyond that
my largest hewittii is now in leaf..and is about 18 " ( 45 cm) tall..
i didnt record the corm size when i potted it up..
im keeping a log on my titanums.. i need to with hewittii.. just to see
how much girth they put on yr to yr...
good luck to ya tropic.. hope u can find if anything ..some seed...
just got one from tindara.. its 5 1/2" ( 13 cm) wide..has excellent roots and
side root hairs goin..so.. hopefully it will take fast..
has a 2 inch ( 5 cm) nice healthy petiole ..:)
its potted up and in semi shade..especially with all this heat were getting
lately..
whew..enough already !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now i have to find a few decent sized descus-salvae and gigas..
and i'll be a happy camper.. LOL
?? tropic.. have you tried to propagate via leaf cuttings on any of your
titanums? if so..any sucess.. theres a grower in NY,USA that does..and
seems to have great success...
update on the 1/2 pounder ..
its now 36 inches (91 cm) tall..above potting mix
the petiole is just under 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter
im thinking it will put on a bit more height then leaves will
unfurl and go to mature height..
were having "perfect amorph weather" right now..
days high 80sF..nites low 70sF..semi cloudy, moderate
humidity ..for utah..:)
hope to get another good sized hewittii this fall..then
i'll have to wait for next spring. sigh..
LOL
