Deadheading Cannas

Beverly Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

I need advice on deadheading cannas. Do you do it? If so, do you cut back to the first leaf or do you just cut off the part with the seed pods. I don't want to damage any future bloom stalks. Thanks.

I think if I remember correctly that each Canna stalk only blooms once, and it just keeps growing new stalks for new blooms.
So you could cut the bloom stem down to the first top leaf, or if you want seeds leave the spent flowers there.

Thanks, Frostweed. I may leave a few seedpods because I like the burgundy color they become, but my cannas are so thick I don't need to plant seeds.

The seed pods are ornamental and attractive but if you want it to keep blooming, it is recommended to cut the stalk to the soil. The plant is less likely to keep producing blooms when it is directing its' energy toward seed production.
